I think it takes a lot of both, Irish. The only comparable event I think we have in the States is probably the Pike's Peak Climb. The Pike's Peak climb is insanely dangerous, but competitors don't have to worry about slamming into a tree or building that is inches from the course.

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.

In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there was one only.

This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said to the Lord,

“You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”

The LORD replied, "my precious, precious child, I Love you and I would never forsake you! During your times of trial and suffering when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you." -- unknown

God saw he was getting tired and the cure was not to be.
So he put his arms around him and whispered, "Come with me."

Although we loved him dearly, we could not make him stay.
A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands to rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us, he only takes the best. -- unknown

I imagine that they would not think highly of it. But they certainly may have called it for what the majority of it is. "Steaming heaps of BS sent magically through the air to our eyes and ears in great torrents at the speed of light... and it reeks mightily as well!!!"
