Crashed my scoot, not serious

Hi gang, sorry to say but I laid it down this morning :( It wasn't a serious crash thank goodness but it made me think about posting a cautionary note to the rest of you in scooter land. The incident happened rounding a sharp corner and while I'm guessing, I think a larger bike with higher ground clearance may not have done this. I leaned hard into the turn at around 20MPH and used my opposing handlebar pressure technique only to have the rear end of the scooter slide out from under me, causing the kickstand to catch pavement and I lost control of her. Luckily I hit nothing but the road itself with the bike and my body. Two things to remember: Our scooters are NOT sport bikes and hard or fast cornering isn't recommended AND wearing proper safety gear DOES prevent injuries! Thankfully, good gloves and the right technique without panicking kept my body from serious harm. The scoot? Actually she's ok as well, despite a few new scrapes. Even the mirrors stayed intact! RIDE SAFELY!

Two things to remember: Our scooters are NOT sport bikes and hard or fast cornering isn't recommended AND wearing proper safety gear DOES prevent injuries! Thankfully, good gloves and the right technique without panicking kept my body from serious harm. So true! I see so many riding scooters without helmets and I shake my head. They think because it doesn't have the size and power of a motorcycle that they'll be safer. I won't get on anything with a motor without a helmet.

Most important thing is you're allright. And yeah, fast cornering with a two-wheeler with a rear engine and 90% of the total weight in the back is not a good idea.

Really after thinking about it, it's more of a ground clearance thing. Scooters only have 4-5" of clearance whereas a crotch rocket like a Ninja has more and you can throw it into a turn with confidence. Thanks to all for the good words. Be safe!!!

The good news is that the scoot only suffered very minor scratches on the black and the plastics were fine so no need to make a claim. As I mentioned before, even the mirrors stayed intact so nothing really to be upset over thankfully but yes, I do have full coverage at a relatively high (I think) $327. a year.

Ahh im very glad to hear that !! Mine is $140 a year currently but that is just liability ins & covers it if it gets stolen. I will be getting a quote for full coverage here soon. Just have to get the scoot back running first.

I honestly need to be reminded every time about how a helmet is improving safety.
I do wear gloves and goggles, but no helmet most of the time on my scoot.
Never had an accident, never hope to ever have one!
And if I do have one, hope it's a minor one (like falling off the scoot from a stand still or something)

BTW, this reminds me of a free game they have on an android tablet, of a motorcycle rider riding on the road, zigzagging between slower cars, gaining speed every time he/she has a close call with a truck or car or object, until at a certain point in the game you gain 160MPH, and hitting something is bound to happen.
When it finally does happen, the rider often flies in the sky, slides over the road for several seconds, rolls over the road, and sometimes gets ran over by a truck.
Then the injury count comes, usually between $100k and $500k on hospital costs, and you're ready to roll again!
In real life, not so, but in the game it is.. :)

Yeah there's not a lot of clearance on these things, I have Shinko SR-007 tires which really hold the road and I've 'scraped' going around a turn quickly before... Wasn't even going that fast, I didn't think, like yourself it let me know, these are not sport bikes.

Worse still is those sorry rear shocks don't hold up much.
And you better haven't lowered your ride in favor of speed and fuel economy.

One thing I did learn is we can always use the line through technique, works way better than in a car.

Glad everything was okay for the OP. When I was travelling in Asia I was shocked to see how many Vietnamese riders would have a helmet on but leave it unfastened. It's totally crazy behavior. >:(
