Favorite places to eat:
How about a listing of great places to eat while we are travelling? I'm not talking about chain restaurants; instead, the independent establishments that you may not notice, but offer outstanding food. Post your favorites: give the name, location, and a brief description of what makes them so special!
I'll start with the following: Galveston, TX: Tortuga Mexican Kitchen: http://www.tortugacantina.com/locations/galveston Fantastic Food! I highly recommend the Tortuga Dinner, it offers a good sampling of items and will definitely fill you up! They have the best salsa I've had, which is served warm. A patio is available to dine outside when the weather is nice. Reasonably priced, for seawall dining. Sulphur Springs, TX: Los Mochis Mexican Restaurant: http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/301/1278...ulphur-Springs This is my favorite Mexican Restaurant to date. Their fajita beef chimichanga is my preferred dish there. Portions are large and tasty while remaining extremely affordable. Kilgore, TX: McKay's Ranch House: http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/202/1045...-House-Kilgore McKay's is a steak-house/buffet, but I never go for the steak (I prefer to grill my own). The buffet is about $12/person, but the food is excellent. The selection is small but it is actually prepared there and not pre-cooked frozen food. They have a great salad bar, but that's not why I go. All-you-can-eat chicken fried steak, blackeyed peas and rice, all very good. Friday night is all-you-can-eat catfish. They have a dessert bar with pie, but the real draw is the bread pudding. Not typically my favorite dessert, their bread pudding is outstanding and is worth going to get that alone! Houston, TX: El Imperial Mexican Restaurant: (Can you tell I like Mexican Food?) http://elimperial.webs.com/ This place smells of cigaratte smoke so if that bothers you, you may want to skip it. If you can handle the smell, the food is great! They have excellent enchilada gravy on their dinners. Large portions, Tasty Food, and it's easy to stop at just off I45. I recommend the Acapulco Dinner which is my go-to meal when I'm there. Paris, TX: Fish Fry: http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/301/1276...Fish-Fry-Paris All you can eat catfish. They serve steak as well and I'm told that it is very good. Fairly expensive, but the quality is outstanding; this is some of the best catfish I've ever eaten. The filets are large, tender, cooked perfectly, and brought to your table hot from the frier! It is all-you-can eat and they are not stingy about it either. The service is great, and they will make sure your plate stays full until you have had enough! Where do you like to eat? |

If you're rolling through Atlanta on I-75, get off in Marietta and stop at the Marietta Diner.
http://mariettadiner.com/ Fantastic food, and a humongous menu to choose from. It doesn't matter what time or day you stop by, they are open 24/7/365. It's only about 3/4 of a mile south of the Big Chicken. |

Food!
You guys bring back a lot of memories with the Connecticut photos. I'm originally from Branford Conn. I just relocated to Fla. (wifes wishs) @ all that I can say is that there is NO GOOD seafood if you have spent your whole life in NE! Irish:tup:
|
I don't know if it's still there but in East Haven Conn. , there is no place like Tollis(sp?) Pizza on main St. The parents left & their children run it now so I'm not sure anymore. The parents even made their own dough! Irish
|
Leos Cajun Corner - Galveston, TX
The Varsity - Atlanta, GA Piggy Park - Columbia, SC Ted's Hotdogs - Tempe, AZ |
If you're ever in the Melbourne Fla area & have a hankering for NE type seafood , go way down the beach road & there is a place called The New England Eatery(sp?). Supposedly the people that run it are from NE & I think that their prices are slightly high but the food is very good. My favorite seafood is Sea Scallops & they have great ones for Fla. Irish
|
There is also a place called "Shells" in Melbourne that has fresh Seafood & very good chowder! They even send their chowder up North! Irish
