valve adjustment question
Hi , just adjusted my valves and scoot now has power and idles.....I set them to .05 mm......I was looking at the use manual under periodic maintenance and it says valve clearance is .012...... is valve clearance and valve adjustment settings the same thing or are they referrring to some other adjustment ?

Hi
Theres no set answer when it comes to valve adjustment settings I always go between .003 and .006 My last scoot ran fine at .003 int and .005 ex my present one the tao tao runs great at .004 int and .006 ex So if the setting works for your particular scoot then all is fine Take care and ride safely Yours Hank |
.003 on 50s and .005 on 150s

.012" is a bit wide, even the liquid cooled engines don't normally go over .008".
Your motor might be a bit happier at what was given earlier. |
.003" to .005" (INCHES not MILIMETERS)

Really I'd go .006" exhaust and .005" intake. It's a little loose but better to have lightly ticking valves than have them go tight on you. Ticking valves are happy valves. |
i downloaded the scootdawg scooter manual for 50cc scooter and it says .05 mm or .002 inches

I just adjusted my valves at .005 and get a loud ticking thats ok? 150cc

On a 150cc it's best to set the intake at .004 inches and the exhaust at .005 inches. On a 50cc the stock setting is .002 inches but the hot setup is .003 inches.
If your valves sound loud at .005 inches it could be a slight mistake happened. I usually set the valves to clearance then rotate the engine until you're back at compression again and check them. I've found a slight difference from what I thought I set them at doing that. It's a good check. |
Thank you good info

The valve adjustment can be tricky on 150s, after adjusting turn the motor over a few times and re-check, and only spin the motor clockwise
