Motorcycle And Scooter News

I used to link articles I thought were relevant to a certain Italian scooter forum and got crap for it. I will post them here now. That other forum won't receive them anymore.

Take a ride with Kevin Lopez. He does it a lot. He bought his scooters with Stimulus checks to take the place of his wrecked car.

If you need to know if a Chinese motorcycle is reliable watch this video of the last day of a four day, 842 mile trip on two Lifan KPX 250 dual purpose bikes. 223cc, six speed and fuel injected for about the price of an SYM Fiddle 4. There are videos of the other days and a followup video about the experience. No problems were had by the two of them.

A whole lot of truisms here. Without foaming at the mouth I've been to the land of a certain European brand. They have their maintenance issues too. Over 14k on two oil changes! The 139QMB 50cc is a workhorse. Even at 14,000 km of the gauge is deceptive.

Part 2 of the Vespa survey.

https://scooterlab.uk/part-2-vespa-g...024-hpe-rst22/

I liked the "fair amount of blown engines due to high oil consumption". In fairness the problem occurs during break in but many people don't even think about checking their oil as quickly as it's consumed during that time.

That Honda Stylo 160 is sharp! I know the US market won't get them though. I almost got a Honda PCX 160 but have been told Honda recommends the valves be checked something crazy, like every 2000 miles AND its a PITA to get to the valves. I never verified this with my local Honda dealer though, I just purchased a Genuine Buddy 125 instead. I know my way around them pretty well. But I would verify those crazy Honda rumors if we got that dope Stylo 160 in the USA!

I can't imagine that a Honda would need that kind of valve check after the initial post sale adjustment. The recommended distance between adjustments on a Chinese scooter is about 2400 miles but I found that it wasn't necessary after the first two for a good long time. You would think that wear would be minimal on a Honda built with Japanese materials.

I'm thinking you'll find that to be true on your Buddy. Unless someone flogs the living crap out of a scooter the valves settle in after a while.

sc00ter 02-11-2024 11:51 AM

I never verified the 2000 valve check with my local dealer concerning the PCX. My wife said if that's true then Honda is having some assembly issues and to stay far away for one. We've owned many Honda scooters and have never had to mess with valves in the past. I'll try to drop in my local dealer and verify this crazy rumor and report back.

Now my Buddy 125 gets ridden hard but I baby it and stay on top of all services. I did the initial valve check around 700 miles (in spec) and checked them over the weekend and they were still in spec at 6000 miles. My old Buddy 125 would need the exhaust side adjusted as it was always a tad tight at every check but it was never out enough to cause any issues.

I've seen both cheap China (Ice Bear) and "premium" brand scooters need equal valve adjustments, both tight or loose, so just do the service when suggested if the initial checks are out of spec. If the initial checks are good I tend to get a bit lazy.

kz1000st 02-13-2024 03:36 PM

This is his story. I watch his videos all the time to see if or when he has a problem. So far very few. BTW that kilometer reading translates to 4200 miles in 9 months. Not bad for a cheap Chinese scooter.

I used to be into old Chevy cars from the 60's. At almost every car show someone would have a Harley Topper. They are Italian made if I recall and really cool in person. Cushman scooters and Mustang "mini" motorcycles also made a showing. That Topper link/find was awesome! Thanks for linking.

Thank you.

It's why I'm doing it. I'd like to think these links have something for a lot of people.

Do you want a 300cc scooter at 150cc prices? This from the owners of Benelli and QJ Motors.

sc00ter 02-28-2024 08:46 AM

We had a Keeway dealer when scooters first made a comeback. Genuine was still PGO, that's how long ago it was! Keeway made some good stuff back then. Plastics that weren't brittle, metal didn't corrode after one riding season and the seats had nice thick vinyl. And they were reliable. But no one carries them anymore. Shame as I would like to see that new 300cc in person.

Right now Italica is the new brand being sold in my area. Bintelli as well (remember, I almost bought a Scorch 150cc for a commuter) and obviously Tao Tao and Ice Bear. I don't care for the last 2 brands but if you stay on top of one they are doable. So that's what is dominating my roads right now. It seems most scooter sales are based on lowest price possible around here. Not a bad thing if the quality is there.
