Hey all, so i was tired of my stock muffler so I tried to modify a couple months ago, and things did not go so well. I have been riding open pipe for a while and finally this week I got off my butt and got to work on my shorty build.
Using a grinder with a cutting disks, we took cut the muffler in half removed the muffler end.

We ditched the muffler side and opted to modify the cat to create the new shorty. the hardest part of this build was drilling out the metal folded inside this pipe(is it titanium?)

here is the somewhat tacky inlet side before welding. My buddy provided me with plenty of mesh and screen of different sizes to help muffle the sound.

With the pipe shortened, we used the fiberglass insulation and the metal liner, along with all the mesh my friend provided with me. the pipe in the center is the cat thingy after we drilled it out.

Here is a pic of how it looked after the welding

bolted up in my room to see if everything lined up. i opted not to reuse the aluminum shield because mine was pretty beat up. I put a layer of gloss black to cover up the rust. also i did reuse the chrome endcap to add some contrast.

Here it is after mounting, but before i put on the bracket, it sounds only slightly louder than stock and im pretty happy with it :)

That's a great job.
I actually did something similar to that a few years back. But I just riveted it back. lol Without all that baffle metal, I got more speed. :)

Looks good. Would like to see a pick of the whole bike with it, if you can. Does it sound much different? Just curious.

I can def post a full pic of the scoot during the day so you can get a better look at it. I still need to do some grinding, but i wanted to see if it would even last before I spent more time on it. and prodig, i hope it doesnt rust fast either, i sprayed it with some cheap gloss black spray paint, so i dont know how long it will last. LASTLY, i washed it after that last pic and it messed up yesterday, tonight i finally traced the problem to a blown fuse. lame...

Nice scoot , I see your front lenses are a little yellowed.

Heres a trick to make them look new again.

Take a soft buffing pad and buff them with a little dab of ultra-brite toothpaste.

U lose a couple pounds. And the muffler is now sstraight thru. The stock muffler is not straight thru. So with proper jettin. , I suppose it would offer better performance. of course I now recommend just buying a Briggs and Stratton muffler. CheAp
easy

A large diameter muffler causes better performance, and better muffling.
A large diameter exhaust tip cause better performance, but lower sound muffling.

The larger the muffler pot diameter, the deeper the sound.
The longer the muffler pot, the deeper the sound, but the lower the performance.

The longer the exhaust tip, the better the muffling, but the lower the performance.

There's a balance there.
Best balance would be large dia muffler, large dia tip. Short length muffler and tip.
